Methyl nitroso-urea with a 2-substituted glucose, used as an antibiotic (effective against growing Gram positive and Gram negative organisms), and also to induce a form of diabetes in experimental animals (rapidly induces pancreatic B cell necrosis if given in high dose). By using multiple low doses in a particular strain of mice, it is possible to produce insulitis followed later by diabetes, a model for juvenile-onset diabetes in humans.
